Climate and food security resources for alternative protein startups
GFI Israel welcomes the opportunity to help emerging and growing alternative protein startups navigate climate funding and food security challenges. We have developed this suite of resources intended to guide entrepreneurs and founders’ work to position their innovations within the climate-smart food system.

We are fortunate to engage with alternative protein innovators across Israel and are constantly looking for new ways to provide assistance. If there are new climate-related resources you would like us to develop, or if you have specific needs regarding climate engagement, please feel free to make a recommendation.
Please note that GFI Israel is technology and company-agnostic within the alternative proteins sector. We are committed to advancing the entire field through climate action and food security initiatives.
Fundraising resources
200 local & global investors and accelerators focusing on climate solutions, agricultural innovation, and food systems (VC funds, CVC, angels, and incubators)
- Climate Bonds Alternative Protein Criteria: intended for food industry stakeholders looking to issue green bonds. The criteria also includes a concise set of standards, guidance docs, and an Excel assessment tool that let producers, retailers, investors, and policymakers verify whether alternative-protein operations align with a 1.5 °C climate pathway. Producers and retailers can certify products and identify hotspots; investors can verify projects for green‑finance eligibility; and policymakers or procurement teams can embed the criteria in tenders and incentive schemes to accelerate low‑carbon protein adoption.
Thought leadership
- Roadmap and Key Steps for Non־Animal Protein (Plant and Alternative) Towards Israel’s Food Security 2050: The report recommends that Israel replace up to 60% of its animal-based protein consumption with alternative proteins by 2050 to ensure food security. Green Queen article about the report
- Plant-Based LCA analysis: To evaluate the potential of plant-based meat to reduce the environmental impacts of the food system, GFI commissioned EarthShift Global to complete a comprehensive, ISO-certified life cycle assessment (LCA). This LCA is the most comprehensive, open-access LCA conducted to date (2024)
- Coming soon, Alternative Proteins as a Scope 3 Emissions Reduction Strategy: Our forthcoming report examines how alternative proteins can serve as an effective tool for companies looking to reduce their scope 3 emissions across food supply chains. This analysis provides quantitative insights into emissions reduction potential and offers strategic and policy frameworks for corporations.
Tools and Technical knowledge
- Plant-Based LCA software: includes data on 4,000 ingredients. Its free tier lets users compare and calculate the footprint of different ingredient combinations, streamlining sustainable product design. It also allows companies to perform preliminary environmental impact assessments in early development stages. The paid subscription enables users to conduct a full, certified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study.
- Life Cycle Assessment Guide for Alternative Protein Manufacturers: A comprehensive best-practices handbook for alternative protein companies interested in conducting LCAs.
- Alternative Proteins ESG Reporting Frameworks: For companies to assess and report ESG impacts of their business practices and products.
